Guided by strong upperclassmen, the Trenton High School Girls Tennis team set a high bar last season that shifted the standard for what could be accomplished by the program.
With six seniors throughout the lineup, the team headed into the Regional tournament undefeated in league play. Finishing second in the league overall, Trenton qualified for the state tournament and thus set the standard for this season.
While they were losing the aforementioned six seniors to graduation, they did bring back some of the team from last year and also welcomed in some newcomers from a junior varsity team that had a strong season of their own.
The team as a whole had high hopes headed into the year but, according to No. 1 doubles player Lexie Adamovich, they knew that this year would be one focused on growth.
“It’s definitely a rebuilding year, but we had a lot of strong incoming players that will make a great impact for the team as a whole,” Adamovich said.
With wins at the Grosse Ile Quad tournament and over Riverview, the team has started off strong and they will hope to continue their momentum as the season rolls on.
Though six seniors graduated last year, the players that have returned have found that the experience that they gained last year has already helped them so far and will likely do the same as the team approaches postseason play.
“The experience with my partner Lexy Sawicki last year helped this year tremendously. Playing with her last year has allowed us to grow and build a stronger partnership this year. Our hard work in the previous season solidified our one doubles spot this year,” Adamovich said.
In addition to the No. 1 doubles team of Adamovich and Sawicki, No. 1 singles player Paige Trela has come back to the team for one last go-around. All-League and last year’s team MVP, Trela will be a major factor in the team’s success moving forward.
Though the season is still kicking into gear and the fact that they are still working out some of the kinks expected with a lesser experienced team, the program has set its sights on one hurdle they know they’re going to have to overcome to achieve their broader goals.
“Allen Park is definitely going to be our toughest competition, but we can overcome them with hard work at practice and a positive attitude,” Adamovich said.
If the team is able to surpass the standard of last season and get by Allen Park, they know that the sky’s the limit.
“For this season to be a success we need to place in Leagues and Regionals and then qualify for States.”
It may have served as strictly a year for the program to grow for other teams, but the Trenton High School Girls Tennis team has shown that they can be competitive while their talent develops.
