Experienced or not, team finds ways to win

The past few years for the Trenton High School boys tennis team have been a tale of success despite constantly changing circumstances.

In the 2017 season, the team won the Regional Championship on the back of a strong core of seniors. In 2018 with that senior class having graduated, the team managed to finish second at Regionals and made it to States with a relatively young group.

The 2019 campaign is probably much more closely aligned with 2017 in terms of team makeup and they should have a great chance to match, or even surpass, that team’s accomplishments.

Cody Towe, the No. 2 singles player on the team this year, noted that the expectations for the team were high, but it would take hard work to be able to raise the bar from last year.

“This year I honestly didn’t expect us to be as good as last year, but I knew that we had potential to become a great team,” Towe said. “We lost a few of our top seniors last year, and it made some other kids step up.”

With the season in full swing, the results to this point have been promising. The Trojans remain undefeated in Downriver League play and seem to once again be one of the top teams in the area.

“We have been pretty good this year,” Town said. “We have not lost a league match so far and a lot of different players on the team have been doing well.”

Along with Towe at No. 2 singles, senior Joey Cormier is holding his own in the No. 1 singles spot for the second consecutive season. Also on the singles side, No. 4 Brayden Hill has dominated the competition so far, with big wins over Woodhaven and first-place finishes in the John Shade Invitational and the Early Bird Woodhaven Invitational — a great sign for the Trojans depth.

As for the doubles, Coach Rich Menzel has switched up some pairings over the early portion of the season but has appeared to find a winning combination with the No. 2 pairing of Alek Kacorzyk and Lucas Cox.

The experience, depth and top-level talent that the Trojans have this year should fare well for them as the season wears on and, as Towe noted, the team is focused on being the best group they can be.

“Everybody has to play smart and focus on taking good shots. If everyone does that, we should be good.”

As the team prepares for the Downriver League tournament on Oct. 7 in Woodhaven and eyes a potential strong run at MHSAA Regionals on Oct. 10, they should feel good about their chances in continuing the momentum of the past few years.
