The Trenton Branch of the Women’s National Farm and Garden Association recently presented three area high school graduates with $1,000 scholarships to assist them with their continued education at college.
The recipients were Trenton High School 2019 graduates Lauren Monthei and Aubrey Vellmure, along with Woodhaven High School graduate Blaike Hale. The awards were presented by Trenton Branch President Heather Kaper during honors nights at the respective schools near the end of the last school year.
Monthei is now attending Grand Valley State University where she is studying to become a wildlife conservationist. Vellmure is now at Michigan State University with her sights set on a career in environmental engineering. Hale intends to pursue a civil engineering education in college.
The local branch of the national association awards scholarships each year with the intent of assisting students interested in pursuing education in horticultural and related fields.
The money for the scholarship is raised by the group at an annual Christmas Party. Caper said the group currently is working on plans for its upcoming Christmas party, which will be held from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Grecian Center in Southgate.
The goal of the Women’s National Farm and Garden Association is to stimulate an active interest in the conservation of natural resources and an appreciation and love for country life; assist the women on the farm and the women in the city to a realization of their interdependence and to a better understanding of their mutual problems; to help women and men through scholarships and expert advice to the best training in agriculture, horticulture, nutrition, forestry and other environmentally related professions; and to cooperate with national and international groups of women of similar interest.
