Anderson Elementary School was visited Tuesday, Sept. 17, by the Trenton Rotary Club for the dedication of a “little library.” Matt Hatty, Rotary president, was present along with Paul and Mari Frost. Joining them were members Rob Bovitz and Kim Arganello. Anderson Principal Doug Mentzer and Community Liaison Director Dr. Mike Doyle were present on behalf of Trenton Public Schools.
The inspiration for the project came from a Rotarian initiative where individual clubs were to encourage and support the creation of ‘little libraries” in their respective communities. It then became the mission of Paul Frost, who began looking at other little libraries in neighboring communities as well as nationally by using the internet. Ultimately, he used a structure that he had previously built and was housed at Westfield Park.
Frost grabbed a hold of this project and ran with it. His goal was to create a structure of durability and at the same time create an attractive site that would peak curiosity and encourage the idea of exploring different titles. From beginning to end, Frost spent in excess of 60 hours remodeling and repurposing what would become the “little library.” It is entirely custom made. Even the finials were hand turned to fit the structure. Materials were donated by the Frost Family, Mans Lumber, and the Trenton Rotary.
Mentzer sees the library becoming a centerpiece for the school’s entry. The hope is that students and parents alike will find books of interest and add to the” taking and giving” to build the library’s book selection. Anyone wishing to donate books should stop by the main office during school hours. The library offers a multitude of future uses. Mentzer shared that during March Reading Month, the little library will travel to the classes that log the most reading!
